Mountain Bike Missoula is a nonprofit organization supported through memberships, grants, and our annual Tour de Fat fundraiser. We are essentially a mountain biking club, made up of community members that stay involved in local mountain biking issues. Our mission is to promote responsible mountain biking activities in western Montana.

Past Work and Accomplishments

  • Annual trail repair projects in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area (RNRA), Mount Jumbo and Sheep Mountain areas. Projects have included organizing volunteer groups of 10-20 bikers, who have installed drainage dips and water bars, rerouted trails, removed brush, and even built a bridge. With grant money, we have also hired Montana Conservation Crews to do additional trail work. We have tackled major projects within the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area on the Wallman, Curry Gulch and Woods Gulch trails. Officially sponsored a 1.5 mile segment of the Woods Gulch trail for annual brush removal and trail grooming.

  • Sponsored the Subaru-IMBA Trail Care Crew to come to Missoula four times. They helped train volunteers and provided advise on trail maintenance to Forest Service land managers.

  • Print and distribute free of charge to local bike shops, "bicycling etiquette" and "share the trail" hang tags for attachment to new bicycles.

  • Submitted written comment on trail management scenarios proposed by the Lolo National Forest. Our position it that through continuing education and proper sign usage, we can achieve cooperation, consideration and tolerance of all trail users.

  • Currently working with the U.S. Forest Service to develop an outreach program entitled "Share The Trail" which, through presentations, will introduce 5th-7th graders to the concepts of responsible mountain biking.

  • Weekly, advertised, member-led mountain bike rides to promote area trails.
