September 1997
The IMBA Trail Care Crew worked with 20 volunteers and Forest Service employees on the Wallman Trail near Kench Meadows in the Rattlesnake Recreation Area in Missoula. The Trail Care Crew composed of Mike and Jan Riter gave us training on the best way to build grade dips to divert water. We successfully reworked about 300 yards of trail placing about 30 grade dips and several water bars. |

Fall 2001
We approached the Lolo National Forest about re-routing a trail on Lolo Forest land on Mount Jumbo to prevent riders from ending up on private property. The new trail's design and layout, was jointly agreed to by Forest Service officials, LIMB members and a Subaru-IMBA Trail Care Crew. View photos from this project.
Actual work began on the weekend of August 25 and 26, when a Subaru-IMBA Trail Care Crew provided oversight to about 20 volunteers, each day, who performed manual labor to cut in the first quarter-mile of the brand new trail. Another trail building weekend on October 7th saw additional volunteers continue the work. Then in mid-October, LIMB paid a 6-person Montana Conservation Crew to finish the trail, including building switch-backs. LIMB member Jed Little, who served as the project coordinator, provides these statistics:
* 66 volunteers contributed 285 hours of trail work
* LIMB spent $2,000 to hire a Montana Conservation Crew
* LIMB spent $440 on materials
* Trail length is 6/10ths of a mile

May 1998
The Trail Care Crew arrived in Missoula again in an attempt to work with the city on trail repair on the Mount Jumbo Open Space. The city was reluctant to do much work before the final management plan for Mount Jumbo was adopted. However, Mike and Jan were able to meet with Parks Department leaders and Open Space officials and share some of their expertise. They also did maintenance demonstration project in the Jumbo Saddle area and repaired trail on Forest Service land above Woods Gulch. |

May 2000
We assisted the Lolo National Forest with a trail work project in the Sawmill Gulch area of the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. Many of the trails in the area are old logging roads, which were not laid out with drainage considerations in mind. In this case, rain water was channelling down the middle of the trail causing rutting and erosion problems. The Forest Service used a backhoe to dig the drainage dips, while 16 volunteers organized by LIMB did the finish work by hand. They used McClouds and Polaskis to "soften the edges" and shape the drainage dips so they are more bicycle- and hiker-friendly. Each drainage dip was completed with a sprinkling of native grass seed and straw mulch. |

June 18 - 20, 1999
Thanks to all the volunteers that helped us build new trail and repair old trails in the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area. The Subaru/IMBA National Trail Care Crew (composed of Mike and Jan Riter) came to Missoula again, and provided oversight and direction for volunteers and a Montana Conservation Corps Crew who did trail repair and reroute work on the Wallman Trail. We cataloged over 200 hours of volunteer labor. |

October 1998 -
LIMB member Keith Dustrud worked with the Forest Service on seven grad dips in Sawmill Gulch in the Rattlesnake. The goal was to work with the Forest Service so we could come to an agreement on the pitch and depth of the grade dips. We wanted to make sure they were hiker and mountain bike friendly. |
